How do you define beauty?
I don’t know that beauty can be defined. It can be so many things. It is unique to the individual. For me, beauty is a Mother caring for her child, a flower you notice while on a walk, a smile…If someone is unable to see, can they not experience beauty? Outward beauty can be deceiving. Real beauty is not only seen, but felt, heard, touched. We can feel beautiful when we use a new product, style our hair a certain way or wear a particular outfit. But true beauty flows out of us when we express Love.
2. When you think of a person who embodies both inner & outer beauty, who comes to mind? Why?
One of my best friends, Kiley. The first time I saw her I thought to myself, “she looks like an angel.” She was wearing a hat that reminded me of the Anne of Green Gables books I used to read when I was a little girl (something rarely seen at that time in NYC). We didn’t become close until many years later when she was one of the few people who helped me through a very difficult time. She is always pretty, but it was then that I really recognized her inner beauty. She gives so much of herself to help others. She makes me want to be a better person. Little did I know when I first met her, that years later I would recognize she is in fact an angel sent from God.
What makes you feel beautiful?
Honestly, I struggle with feeling beautiful. Like most women, I feel beautiful when my skin is clear and my hair is shiny. But I feel my best when I am healthy, mentally as well as physically. Usually that means making time for prayer, putting good nutrition into my body and having therapeutic conversations and hard laughs with close friends.
What is a piece of beauty advice that you would give to your younger self?
Enjoy your natural beauty! When I was a teenager I thought makeup made me beautiful. I look back now and think, “If only I had appreciated keeping it simple”.
